5 Weird Things I Believe About Bands

Standard

It seems I’m always confessing something to you and, since it’s a new year, it doesn’t seem like a good time to break with tradition.

So here’s how it is. I believe some absolutely ridiculous things about bands. We’re not talking little things like every band is required to have a pithy response to someone requesting Free Bird. We’re talking big things. Huge things. Things that are so completely absurd I can only imagine how much you are going to laugh about this.

You’re lucky I like you.

5. Bands live on good vibes

Bands never seem to be rolling in the money. Even though they are doing something that we enjoy, touring extensively and leaving behind their life to play for us, they still seem to be strapped for cash or, at least, not possessing vast sums of the paper substance that rules our lives.

So, how do they survive? How can they eat or house themselves if they don’t have the bucks?

Easy. They live on good vibes.

The Evidence: Now, I understand why you’d be skeptical. It seems far-fetched…or does it? Look at the picture above. REALLY look at it. Look at Steve’s face, that devil-may-care expression. Look at Bo, Kyle and Jonny. They’re all concentrating and crooning and looking nonchalant. Look at Kim, Ellen and Tom. Again, studies in being cool. They aren’t worried about money because they receive all of their nutritional needs from the good vibes of the audience.

Bands don’t need money for food. Your energy fuels them. They have perfected renewable energy and it’s only one reason of many we should love them.

4. Every band has at least one awesome painter/sketch artist/writer

No one will convince me that this is false. Every band seems to have one of these people. They can croon, strum and manage to draw it all beautifully.

The Evidence: The Decemberists have New York Times Bestselling writer Colin Meloy. Los Campesinos! have Rob, designer of some of their shirts. Amanda Palmer has…well, Amanda Palmer. She’s a pretty gifted artist with sketching and everything else.

Every band has one or more of these individuals. It might actually be a prerequisite for being in a band. Someone should look into that.

3. Every band I like knows each other.

The Evidence: Until recently, I had no proof for this phenomenon. Much like the majestic Sasquatch, this beast was elusive prey. But on October 26th, 2012, I got all the proof I needed. This was, of course, the Freelance Whales concert. As I was walking around after the show getting signatures for my shirt and fawning over the band members, one of them asked me about a signature on the shirt. I told him it was Tom, the lead guitarist for Los Campesinos!. He smiled and said that he played trumpet for the band when they were stateside.

And that is all the evidence I need.

2. Every band I like lives in the same city.

This is a simple and more than a little ridiculous assumption.

The Evidence: Portland. Do you know who lives in Portland? EVERYONE. Every member of
The Decemberists, Isaac Brock, half of the band She & Him (granted, that’s only one person). The list goes on and I am certain, absolutely certain, that I’ve provided ample proof.

1. Bands live together

Now, just to clarify, I don’t mean that bands live in the same place. That was amply covered in point two. No, when I say that bands live together, I mean they live in the same house.

The Evidence: Antennas Up. They used to live together in what they called the hAUs. This clearly means that bands live together in bunk beds similar to what I imagined Hogwarts dormitories would have looked like before the movies ruined that idea forever, thanks a whole ton.

Bands live together and say good night to each other a la the Brady Bunch and gossip around their breakfast table while they pelt each other with marshmallows from their hot chocolate and I really am getting off point.

20130114-201257.jpg

Bunk beds like bands totally use. Picture from http://decoholic.org/2011/11/27/four-kids-one-room-bunk-beds/.

If any of this is a bit off-putting, it’s just how I roll. Sorry ya’ll.

A Little Christmas!

Standard

It’s truly a brilliant time of year.  People are driving like maniacs, threatening physical violence in the malls and absentmindedly throwing money in little red kettles after being made to feel like a jerk because the bell ringer opened the door for you and wished you a “Merry Christmas.”

Like I said, it’s a lame time of year.

But, all kidding aside, I look forward to being able to spoil the people I love.  I’ve been buying presents, returning presents that I found better replacements for, and trying to keep my sanity.

And I’m getting ready to drive to St. Louis on Tuesday to visit my best friend and see Fun. with her.  Wonderful!

I’m in such a good mood that I decided to spread a little Christmas cheer your way.  Please see the following playlist, listen to it and suggest your favorite Christmas songs in return.  It puts everyone in a great mood!

Here are the playlists on Spotify and Grooveshark.

Christmas! Playlist. Please ignore the “H” that looks like a wonky “A.”

“Alien Christ” by Cloud Cult

“Christmas in the Room” by Sufjan Stevens

“Please Daddy (Don’t Get Drunk This Christmas)” by The Decemberists

“Christmas Wish” by She & Him

“The Blizzard” by Camera Obscura

“I Hate Christmas Parties” by Relient K

“Wonderful Christmastime” by The Shins

A Playlist To Win Your Heart

Standard

I am not exaggerating when I say this was one of the coolest ideas ever.  My friend Jimmy posted a very cool post on his blog “Highly Questionable.”  The short of it is, what if you had the chance to be with your soul mate, but you had to convince them to give you a chance with a mix tape?  Jimmy’s blog post got me thinking, and I decided that I was up to the task of crafting a playlist specifically for my soul mate.

For me, one of the hardest parts of this was deciding what kind of story I wanted to tell. Do I go for the epic love story? Or should I go for an action/adventure flick? Ooooh, or maybe one of those foreign films with the subtitles!

Well, none of the above. Or maybe all of the above mixed up in some weird concoction that I call my musical taste. I like music that makes me feel pretentious, and music that makes me feel like a conformist.

One Playlist to rule them all, One Playlist to find them. One Playlist to bring them all and in the darkness bind them (sorry…really excited for The Hobbit).  And voila!  The result:

“I Was Once A Loyal Lover” by Death Cab For Cutie

“Romance Is Boring” by Los Campesinos!

“I’ve Got It All (Most)” by Modest Mouse

“Coin-Operated Boy” by The Dresden Dolls

“Gray Or Blue” by JayMay

“O Valencia!” by The Decemberists

“Shameless” by Man Man

“Hurricane and Fire Survival Guide” by Cloud Cult

“The Gambler” by Fun.

“What I’m Trying To Say” by Stars

This story isn’t very complex. It begins with a couple of kids being jaded and cynical about the whole love business. They find each other and share their mutual distrust of love. That backfires, because mocking love always makes love return the favor. Our lovers are convinced their love is doomed, and they’re left wondering why they are so hopeless over each other and/or hopeless in general. BUT, our lovers are redeemed when they realize that life is short, the future is bright and damn it these are some fine tunes.

Questions, comments, sarcastic remarks?

Your move, soul mate. Your move.

PS: Listen to the playlist in its entirety on Grooveshark and Spotify.  It’s smooth listening.

The Gymnast, High Above the Ground – The Decemberists

Standard

All right.  Happy April, everyone.  I’ve got a special treat for you, as far as theme song of the month goes.

I’m in love with The Decemberists, so it only seemed right that I should work them in somewhere.

This is from my favorite album by them, and happens to be a splendid song.  Check it out.

The Gymnast, High Above the Ground by The Decemberists

Oh, and have you checked out the new Dance Card?  Because there are some exciting things on there.  You know.  In case you’re into awesome things.

KDRU – Feb. 22 Show

Standard

Good evening.  I hope you’re all excited about life in general.  I know I am.

Thank you most sincerely to the people listening to my weekly radio show at Drury.  You are paragons of good taste (and/or we’re friends and you feel sorry for me…let’s go with the first one).  For those of you not listening, it’s cool.  Whatever.  No big deal.  I’m just really disappointed and am tearing up a bit.  You should rectify this problem by listening to the show next Wednesday from 11:30-1:30.  It streams here.

I’ll also be on The Weekly Buzz this Friday morning, letting everyone know about some awesome concerts coming their way.  Be sure to listen in.  It’s at 8:30, and I’m pretty sure my voice is an awesome thing to wake up to.  Or so I hear.

Anywho. Here are some of the songs that were played.  I’m not giving a comprehensive list.  I mean, where’s the fun in that?  If, however, you heard a song and want to know more about it, feel free to contact me.

KDRU - Feb. 22

Oh, and the new Fun. album came out yesterday.  I got my bundle in the mail today.  It included this shirt:

Fun. Some Nights shirt...yeah, those are the lyrics to the entire album scrawled in the background. Awesome.

And I am now working on the next installment of Paste Magazine’s Top 50 Albums of 2011.  Yeah, it’s taking awhile, but man there are a lot of albums.  Be patient, young grasshopper, and keep yer eyes peeled.

My Band Shirts

Standard

You know how I’m crazy and get a lot of band shirts?

Yeah. Here they are.

1. Yeah.  It’s Signed.

New Antennas Up shirt. Signed by the band. From left to right (then down): Bo McCall, Kyle Akers, The Ryantist and Jonny Universe.

This doesn't do justice to the awesomeness of the shirt. But it looks like the picture is puffing out the words "Antennas Up." That was too perfect for me to pass up.

The boys signed it and sent it to me.  They get serious props for that.  Oh, and the whole making good music thing.  They get props for that too.

And now I want all of you Springfieldians to follow them on Twitter, like them on Facebook, sign up for their mailing list and harass them until they come to Springfield again.

2. Yeah.  It Rocks.

Ludo Concert Shirt that my friend Nicole made.

My friend Nicole made these shirts for us for the August 2011 Ludo concert (as the pictures tend to let you know…whatever).  She made them the night before.  It’s covered in glitter from us spraying each other with canned glitter…because we were sparkly alien creatures.

And, if you’ll remember from the Without A Face post, Henry Dillard signed the sleeve of the shirt.

It was such a successful night.  Also, send your love to Andrew  Volpe, lead singer of Ludo, and his wife.  He just announced they’re expecting a baby!

3. Yeah. It’s Artsy.

The Decemberists 2011 "Popes of Pendarvia" shirt. Not, however, the official concert shirt.

This shirt means a lot to me for a whole bunch of reasons.  First, it’s the Decemberists.  You know how I feel about them.  Second, it was my first Decemberists concert.  My brother and my friend Brett (he of excellent arm reach from the Ludo concert last month) took me to it (it was my Christmas present from my brother) and we had an amazing time.  John Moen, the drummer, sang me a song.  He WAS singing to me.

And the shirt is awesome by itself.  It’s a pic of Jenny Conlee, multi-instrumentalist for The Decemberists, and it’s just so…cool looking. I feel cooler wearing it.  It’s like I add ten points of cool.  Also, I think I lost all of those points for the future by acknowledging that said points exist.  Damn.

4. Yeah. It’s Psychic.

Mister Heavenly shirt. See! It says "Out of Love"! That's their album title! So clever!

This just seems to encapsulate Mister Heavenly completely.  A pinch of nostalgia, a sprinkle of raspiness, all mixed together with some honey and awesome drums…it’s not a perfect recipe, but it’s a tasty one.  Assuming you’re a person who eats music.  Which would be weird.  Please don’t do that.

Anywho, Mister Heavenly’s great and so is this shirt.

5. Yeah. It’s A Propeller.

Tommy & The High Pilots shirt. It's simple and pretty great.

This is the High Pilots shirt I ended up getting after they didn’t have a different one in my size.  And, you know what?  It was divine intervention.  Because this shirt is great and, in a moment of shameful immodesty, it looks pretty great on me.

And this shirt has a warm, fuzzy memory attached to it.  Matt Palermo, drummer for the High Pilots, sold me this shirt personally.  Man, I love those guys.  That’s another band you all need to help me bring back to Springfield.  Let’s make that happen.  Flitter with them here, Book their Faces here, and peruse their site here.

So those are my band shirts.  What?  Those could be the only ones I have.  YOU DON’T KNOW ME.

My Loot...errr...band shirts.

Oh.  Those.  Right.  Well, if you want to get technical, sure.  I have a few.

Inventory:

The Decemberists – 3 shirts, 1 hoodie

Tommy & The High Pilots – 3 shirts

Ludo – 3 shirts

Antennas Up – 2 shirts

Fun. – 2 shirts

Mister Heavenly – 1 shirt

Without A Face – 1 shirt

Ha Ha Tonka – 1 shirt

I’d say I’m done collecting shirts.  But you know me better than that, don’t you?

Good night darlings!

PS: New contest announced soon (probably Wednesday).  Be prepared (though not Jeremy Irons prepared…props to those who get the reference).

PPS: My quest to listen to Paste Magazine’s Top 50 Albums of 2011 is going well…there are some winners and some duds.  I’ll be sure to release a full review list once I’ve finished.  Why don’t you go ahead and get started?  You’ve got a bajillion hours, right?

South Wood Shops Giclee Print by Carson Ellis

Yeah.  The above is one of a hundred original prints by Carson Ellis SIGNED and NUMBERED by the artist.  For those of you unfortunate enough to not know who Carson Ellis is, she is a brilliant artist.  Her work is eclectic, ranging from illustrating a Lemony Snicket book to being the resident artist for The Decemberists.  You can check her out here.

And my brother was smart enough to realize that this would rock my world.  Success!

And, with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas.  You’ll be hearing from me later.

Best Quotes From Songs – The Love Edition

Standard

I don’t want to get mushy on you all, but there are some quotes about love from songs that I go gaga over.  And you’re going to hear all about my favorites.  Not because you should.  Not even because I want you to.  It’s because you NEED to.  I’m looking out for you.  You’re welcome.  And there are seven because I felt like it.  Have recommendations?  I’ll consider them.

So.  Running in at number 7…

7. “Pink Squares” by I Was A Cub Scout

“Oh, oh, oh, am I in trouble? / Darling, I apologize. / I need you more than anything / Please come back with me tonight. / Oh, oh, oh, am I in trouble? / Darling, I apologize. / I need you more than anything / Please don’t ever leave my side.”

To me, this is a perfect example of a love song.  It’s wonderful.  The thought is so simple, but so right.  A couple has a disagreement and the person that (presumably) started it is trying to make sure the disagreement doesn’t end things for them.  Like I said, it’s simple but seems right.

6. “Lonely Place” by Tommy & The High Pilots

“Oh, and just like me / She wants a family / Create us some energy / Out of the blue. / That we’ll do. / Oh, and maybe she’s someone I’ve made up / And maybe she’s somebody true / But I won’t rest until I know you.”

I adore this song so much.  And I love this thought: maybe you haven’t found the perfect person, but that shouldn’t stop you from looking for them.  I find this song wistful and hopeful and, like I said, I adore it.

5. “King of Carrot Flowers Part. 1″ by Neutral Milk Hotel

“And this is the room one afternoon I knew I could love you / And from above you how I sank into your soul / Into that secret place where no one dares to go.”

This is my favorite Neutral Milk Hotel song, and it’s probably because of this stanza.  I’m not sure if it requires an explanation.  It’s just lovely.

4. “Rise To Me” by The Decemberists

“My darling, my sweetheart, I am in your sway / Two cold climes, come spring time / So let me hear you say / My love / I am gonna stand my ground.”

I love The Decemberists way too much to not include them in this list.  Particularly when this song has such powerful worlds.  I can’t help but be moved when he says “my darling, my sweetheart, I am in your sway.”  It’s beautiful.

3. “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab For Cutie

“If heaven and hell decide / That they both are satisfied / Illuminate the nos on their vacancy signs / If there’s no one beside you / When your soul embarks / Then I’ll follow you into the dark.”

I think this song has become a classic, and rightfully so.  I mean, how wonderfully romantic/soulful/EVERYTHING is it to tell someone that you’d follow them into the dark.  That they wouldn’t be left alone.  EVER.  I think the simple melody underscores the sheer power of the lyrics.

2. “Anything For You” by Ludo

“I’d give up anything. / Anything for you. / I’d give it all. / All of this is true. / But the best story that I could ever tell / Is the one where I am growing old with you. / All I’ve ever wanted, see, was to tell you honestly / I’d do anything for you. / I’d do absolutely anything for you.”

This might be my favorite concept for a love song ever.  The person singing is describing all of these ridiculous, absurd scenarios, then saying that “the best story that I could ever tell is the one where I am growing old with you.”  You get the honesty of the feelings from the lies he tells.

AND, number one!

1. “Slow Hands” by Interpol

“But I am married to your charms and grace / I just go crazy like the good old days / You make me want to pick up a guitar / And celebrate the myriad ways that I love you.”

This quote is brilliant and wonderful and fantastic.  That last line.  How does it not conjure up warm, fuzzy feelings?  ”Celebrate the myriad ways that I love you.”  I’m convinced that if you tell your significant other this, they will swoon.  Better if you serenade them (but only if you can sing).

And that’s that, lovelies.  Just a few thoughts for you all on this absurdly warm evening (for real, it’s November, weather).  Of course, I have a few closing statements:

  1. “Hello Sadness” by Los Campesinos! is available in the US tomorrow.  I highly recommend buying it, listening to it, and falling as in love with that band as I am.
  2. How excited are you for the Ha Ha Tonka/Tommy & the High Pilots concert in a couple of weeks?
  3. Have you submitted shirts for the Best Band Shirts contest?  IT’S GONNA BE GREAT. ENTER NOW.

Best Stories in Songs

Standard

I’m a big fan of the narrative told in a song.  Yes, you can argue (clever you) that every song tells a story.  But what about those songs that are TRYING to tell a story?  A very specific one with characters?

Yeah.  Those songs slay me.  And I’ve decided that you all need to know my favorites.  Because I’m right.

“Lake Pontchartrain” by Ludo.

This song is creepy.  And wonderful.  And gets you pumped.  And it was awesome when Ludo opened the St. Louis concert in August with this.

So.  The story goes that the narrator and his two friends (Darius and Nolan) are going on a road trip.  Just trying to get out of Missouri.  No big deal.  Only it ends at Lake Pontchartrain.  Here’s a video with the lyrics.  Enjoy it.

“That’s how it happened.  Why would I lie?  There were no bodies, I’ve got none to hide.”

“Bronx Sniper” by Mister Heavenly

This song is quite powerful.  Nick Thorburn’s crooning voice sings of a sniper who’s gunning people down, while Ryan Kattner’s (Sidenote: I’m convinced I could be happy living in a cardboard box if Ryan would live in it with me) harsher tones sing of having no remorse while he’s gunning people down.

Really, powerful is the best way to describe it.  Here’s the official video, and here’s a link to the lyrics.*

“I shot you down.  You never had a chance in hell.  I shot you down.  And I felt no remorse ’cause this heart’s a stranger and you’ll love it ’cause it’s dangerous like, this heart’s a stranger and you’ll love it ’cause it’s dangerous like yours.”

“Transistor Radio” by Cloud Cult

I’ve mentioned this song before, but it’s worth mentioning again.  This song is really great.  It’s all about a little boy discovering that his grandfather, who had passed away years ago, was trying to contact him and let him know something important.  The boy goes through a journey, eventually coming to the conclusion that his grandfather was trying to tell him that,

“Where I’ve been, where I am is the show.”

Here’s the song, and here are the lyrics.  Prepare to feel a bit weepy.

“O Valencia!” by The Decemberists

This song is Romeo and Juliet.  It’s a song about forbidden love, and it’s done in such an upbeat way that you almost don’t notice the chick dying…except she does.  It’s sad.  And the music is really catchy.  It’s weird in a way you’d expect from The Decemberists.

Here’s the official video, and here’s a link to the lyrics.

“Oh Valencia! With your blood still warm on the ground.  Valencia!  And I swear to the stars, I’ll burn this whole city down.”

“The Mariner’s Revenge Song” by the Decemberists

Okay.  I know what you’re thinking.  I’m just putting up Decemberists songs because they’re my favorite band.  You’re halfway right.  I’m really familiar with their discography.  As in, I can tell you what was released when, what was going through Colin Meloy’s head when he wrote individual songs, and how good the song is live.

And “The Mariner’s Revenge Song” is just something that sticks with you.  I’ve seen it live twice now and, wow.  It’s kind of the bomb (assuming the bomb consists of the band members pretending to die midway through the song and Colin telling the audience exactly how loud he wants them to scream).

This song is about a boy who’s mother dies after being taken advantage of by a sailor.  The boy vows revenge and, years later, he comes quite close to getting it.

If you don’t listen to any of the other songs, or read any of the other lyrics, do yourself a favor and listen to and/or read the words for this one.  It’s that good.

Here’s the song with the lyrics.

“It gives my heart great joy to see your eyes fill with fear.  So lean in close and I will whisper the last words you’ll hear.”

“The Gambler” by Fun.

I’ve mentioned this song before, because I happen to think it’s a wonderful romantic song.  It’s about the life of a couple, after they meet when they’re 18.  It goes through the phases of their relationship, ending with their children coming to visit them again (presumably when the couple is now old and adorable).  When I started off writing this post, I didn’t think I wanted to include any mushy-type things at all.  That being said, it seemed right to mention this one.  It’s how everyone wants their love story to go (if they’re sane), so deal with my brief romantic moment.

Here’s the song with the lyrics.

“But like the night you took my hand beside the fire, thirty years ago to this day.  You swore you’d be here ’til we decide that it’s our time, well it’s not time, you’ve never quit in all your life.  So just take my hand, you know that I will never leave your side.  You’re the love of my life, you know that I will never leave your side.”

“Neighborhood #1 (Tunnels)” by Arcade Fire

This is arguably my favorite Arcade Fire song.  I love it.  It’s a story about a boy and a girl who are alone in the world due to what must have been one heck of a snow storm.  Listen to it and tell me it doesn’t have some of the most beautiful melodies and imagery in it (hint: don’t actually tell me that.  I’ll know you for a liar).

Here’s the song and the lyrics.

“Then, we tried to name our babies, but we forgot all the names that, the names we used to know.  Sometimes we remember our bedrooms and our parent’s bedrooms and the bedrooms of our friends.  Then we think of our parents.  Well, whatever happened to them?”

“Jellybones” by The Unicorns

This song is hilarious.  It’s about a patient being diagnosed with a very serious case of JELLYBONES.  Unfortunately, the doctor can’t do anything for him.

Here’s the song and the lyrics.

“I woke him up and broke the news.  After everything was sewn I said, ‘Son, you’ve got a full-blown case of what is known as Jellybones.’”

“The Hazards of Love” by The Decemberists

Of course, the songs mentioned earlier don’t include a couple of what I consider excellent concept works.  The first is “The Hazards of Love” by The Decemberists.

This album is genius.  The entirety of it (from the first song to the last) flows seamlessly into one another to tell a story about Margaret, her shape-shifting lover, and the trials they go through.  It’s wonderful.

Here’s a playlist with every song in the album.  And, word to the wise: Sometimes, you can shuffle the playlists I provide you and you will not be threatened with bodily harm.  This time, however, I HIGHLY recommend you follow my advice and DO NOT SHUFFLE.  You will do yourself a disservice, since you will undoubtedly not know what’s going on.  The story is complex.  Don’t underestimate it.

“The Hazards of Love, you’ll learn soon enough.  The prettiest whistles won’t wrestle the thistles undone.  Undone.”

“The Tain” by The Decemberists

I also recommend listening to “The Tain” by The Decemberists.  It began in the same tradition that “Hazards” did, but I think the EP isn’t (purely because of time constraints) as well developed and epic as “Hazards.”

“Darling, dear, what have you done?  Your hands and face are smeared with blood.”

“Broken Bride” by Ludo

Then we have what I would probably say is my favorite EP, the “Broken Bride” EP by Ludo.  If you’ve seen/read “The Time Machine,” you know the general plot of the EP.  Of course, that doesn’t begin to do it justice.  It’s really an epic five songs, and won’t take you too much time to listen.

“I crashed before the birth of Christ, pterodactyls swarming.  You died in 1989, wanna get back to that morning in May.  Keep you in bed.  Never escape.  Holding you close.  Listen to you breathe the evening’s glow of fading light and cooling space.”

Am I missing other concept albums that deserve a shout out?  Probably.  Tell me about it.  Otherwise I’ll never know the error of my ways, and I’ll be insufferably arrogant forever.  Do you really want THAT on your conscience?

*I disagree with some of the lyrics this site has up.  I think the first line is “Later on in the epilogue, THEY FOUND HIM,” and that the last lines of the chorus are “This heart’s a stranger AND YOU’LL LOVE IT ’cause it’s dangerous like, this heart’s a stranger AND YOU’LL LOVE IT ’cause it’s dangerous like yours.”
