Los Campesinos! – Los Angeles, CA: The Echoplex 2-11-12

Standard

Band: Los Campesinos!

Venue: The Echoplex

Location: Los Angeles, CA

Tickets: $16

Date: 2-11-2012

Everyone who knows me or has read this blog knows how much I was looking forward to this concert. I mean, the planets had to align for me to even get there. But it happened. And I have stories.

First, like I told you all weeks ago, it’s always better to go to a concert with someone you like.

Ashley, one of my best friends, and myself at the Los Campesinos! concert.

Yeah. It was a good call to go with her. We navigated LA and got to the concert just as Parenthetical Girls were going on. First, I’d like to say that Parenthetical Girls were amazing. Words fail to describe how excited I am to start listening to them in earnest. Here’s a sample.

But I digress.

So, we get to the concert, and I see Robert at the merch table. My thoughts went something like this: “OH MY GAWD, THAT’S ROBERT!!!” I like to think I was a good dealer calmer when I went and asked him if he would sign my shirt.

I slapped it on the table, and Robert saw the Allyson’s Setlist scrawled across it. He recognized it. He recognized me. Excuse me while I shriek. We chitchatted, mostly because I wouldn’t let him go.

My shirt signed by many talented folks. There are 6 new signatures added...can you spot them?

Robert, Neil, Kim, Ellen, Tom and Jason all signed it. Isn’t it great?

And guess what? Neil, Ellen and Jason all recognized me too. Granted, this probably means I’m vaguely stalkerish with them on Twitter, but I choose to think they don’t mind it.

Gareth, unfortunately, was in the back. He wasn’t feeling great, but his performance didn’t show it. So. On to the goods.

The concert was fantastic. We were close to the front, so we saw all the action.

Gareth, Ellen and Kim from Los Campesinos! Also, some random kid's head.

It’s a little blurry, but I think that makes it charming. When listening to Los Campesinos!, I’m often struck by the excitement and depth I get from the songs. Their performances live do their music justice. Gareth engages with the audience through his gestures. Example:

“Though said with hand in pockets, I mean it hand on heart. You held a gun to his head, pressed your thumbs to her throat in these letters.” (“Letters From Me to Charlotte”)

Gareth actually acts it out. And it’s completely wonderful. Of course, Kim helps by holding her hand to Gareth’s head in the shape of a gun. She’s nice that way. Of course, Kim talks to the audience in a different way. She does it with her eyes and the way she’s singing. Gareth’s fairly stoic. Kim’s not. It makes for such a cool combination.

Tom makes the guitar sound like every guitar should wish it sounded, and Ellen is somewhere behind Tom and Kim, playing bass and looking like the sort of person I always hoped I’d grow up to be. Seriously, I cannot stress how cool that lady is.

Robert Campesinos!

We were right in front of Robert, and that was a wonderful place to be. He was so involved and man, he was playing all sorts of instruments. Seriously, I think he was constantly switching. It was impressive.

I’m giving you snippets, but what I really want to say about that concert is this: I was in a crowd of a few hundred people with sweat pouring down my face and back, I was standing for a few hours, I kept getting pushed around by the other people in the crowd, and I didn’t care. This concert was the most energetic and all-consuming I’d ever been to. After every song, Gareth would say “Thanks a lot” in a sweetly self-deprecating kind of way (which is how a lot of the lyrics he writes comes across). You’d swear he was shy if you didn’t see him on stage and watch him settle in. At one point, he came into the audience and we ate it up.

One person tried to banter with him, but Gareth shut him down by saying it was his turn with the mic. People were crowd surfing, and Gareth said that was the longest anyone had ever stayed up at one of their concerts.

Everyone was crazed and in the moment. It was what I imagine winning at life feels like.

Neil Campesinos!, myself and Robert Campesinos!

Oh, and they’re all as nice as they look and sound. When I got Kim to sign my shirt, I called her by name. She introduced herself before realizing that I had called her by name. I told her I was a little creepy, and she responded:

“It’s not creepy for you. There was this guy the other night and I said, ‘I’m Kim.’ He said, ‘I know.’ Why would you say that? Why wouldn’t you just stay quiet?”

I held Neil’s beer for him while he signed my shirt, and he called me “Tweety Allyson.” Not that I Tweet them a lot, or anything…

They were nice, charming and well practiced in dealing with fans of my ilk. I hope I wasn’t too off putting for them.

In conclusion, they were wonderful and beautiful and I plan on seeing them whenever I get the chance. And meeting Gareth is on my list of things to do. You all should probably send your pity his way.

One more thing before I give you the score. I actually scribbled down the songs as they were being played, giving me an accurate setlist for the concert. Here it is. Enjoy.

“By Your Hand”

“Romance Is Boring”

“Death To Los Campesinos!”

“Life Is A Long Time”

“Letters From Me To Charlotte”

“Songs About Your Girlfriend”

“There Are Listed Buildings”

“We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed”

“Straight In At 101″

“To Tundra”

“You! Me! Dancing!”

“The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future”

“Hello Sadness”

“Baby I Got The Death Rattle”

Encore:

“Miserabilia”

“Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks”

And now it is officially time for the grade:

Concert: A+

Venue: A+

Drink Prices: A+

Audience: A*

Overall: A+

*The only reason the audience doesn’t get a perfect score is because of the random short stocky guy standing next to me. I’ve never been driven to elbow someone before, but homeboy was asking for it. He kept shoving me in an attempt to get in front of me. DON’T NOBODY COME BETWEEN ME AND THE BAND. Let that be a lesson to everyone who goes to a concert I’m at. Though I be but little, I AM FIERCE.

My Ultimate Fangirl Moments

Standard

Before this relationship goes any further, I think you all should know some things about me.  If you feel different about me after you read this list, I’ll understand.  Really.  Underpinning the entire post tonight is a girlish squeal and the clapping of abnormally small hands.  I’m sure that’s off-putting.

The truth isn’t pretty, folks.  It might not even be tolerably neutral looking.  But, here goes:

I am a fangirl.

If some of you are still reading, thank you for giving us a chance.  For the rest of you, my mom says I’m better off anyway (She also said you were no good, will miss me and will wind up alone.  Hope that’s true.).

So, here are my top five fangirl moments.  Be prepared.

The Amanda Palmer Bonding Incident

I was listening to Amanda Palmer’s “Do You Swear To Tell The Truth, The Whole Truth, And Nothing But The Truth So Help Your Black Ass,” and she agreed that the video was quite good.  And she Retweeted me.  There was a good amount of squee.  That’s a scientific term encapsulating how I responded to the following:

Amanda Palmer both Tweeted and Retweeted me. *squeal*

The Honus Honus Hocus Pocus

Give me a lot of credit for that alliteration.  It made me giggle.  This just happened a couple of days ago.  Honus Honus (aka Ryan Kattner), the lead singer of Man Man, read the blog post about Man Man and Tweeted me about it.  It meant a lot.  And it left me speechless for half an hour.  Ask the people calling me at work.  I didn’t say a word.

Honus Honus (aka Ryan Kattner) from Man Man read the blog and Tweeted me about it.

Are Your Antennas Up?

Literally could not think of a better hook for this entry.  I’ve already told you about how Kyle knew my name at the AU concert a few months ago (and, for the record, I still totally consider that one of the best examples of my fangirlhood), so I think it’s fair to tell you how AU responded to the blog post.  They Tweeted me:

Antennas Up read the blog and Retweeted me.

And Jonny Universe (Jon Ulasien, guitars/keys/vocals for AU) shared the blog post on Facebook:

Jon Ulasien shared the blog post about AU on Facebook.

Gareth Campesinos! Is The Exclamation Point

I have not kept it a secret that I’m addicted to Los Campesinos! right now.  I mean, I’m so into them.  For a couple of weeks, they were all I listened to.  And I’m constantly discovering new things I love about their music.  The lyrics are infinitely clever, the music is varied, deep and adorable at the same time, and they are such cool people.

So I Tweeted Gareth.  He’s the lyricist and one of the lead singers of the band.  I decided to tell him that I was in love with him because of his lyrics and the obscenities he Tweets (for real, he has a dirty Twitter Account).  He responded:

Gareth Campesinos! Tweeting me.

I mean, I don’t want to say that means we’re going to have a happily-ever-after or anything, but I think it’s unarguably the start to a beautiful Twitter relationship.  Oh, and he’s since Tweeted me no less than three other times.  I squeal a little bit louder each time.

So.  If you’ve stuck with me through all of that, I’m impressed.  And hopeful that this means you still want to give us a chance.  I promise I won’t let you down.  I’m a great person, really.  Just a desperately uncool one at times.

We still pals?

PS: Ludo concert tomorrow night.  ”A Very Ludo Christmas” promises to be AWESOME.  If you’re not going, you’re almost as uncool as me.  OH BURN.

PPS: Lest you think these are my only fangirl moments…they’re not.  There are so many others.  But these are my favorite/most blush inducing.  My humiliation is your entertainment.

PPPS: I’m sure some of you missed the playlists last night.  That’s fine.  I’m not hurt or whatever.  But there are a few songs I think you should definitely make time to listen to.  “When Water Comes To Life” by Cloud Cult, “Your Ex-Lover Is Dead” by Stars, “Little Lover’s So Polite” by Silversun Pickups, and “Dance Yrself Clean” by LCD Soundsystem.  Ideally, of course, you should listen to all of the songs.  They were picked for their infinite awesome.

PPPPS: I don’t think I’m supposed to use this many “p’s” in a postscript.  Just thought I should point that out for you.

Best Band Shirt Contest Results

Standard

I know I said 7ish for the results.  But, in my defense, I had to print some business cards, wash my hair and watch TV.  Vital things, people.  Oh, and if you haven’t listened to “Hello Sadness” by Los Campesinos! yet…do it.  For real.  This album is rocking my world AND I’M ONLY ON THE THIRD SONG.  Don’t worry, chicks.  An album review will be forthcoming.

But, before I get to excited talking about Los Campesinos! and my desire to stalk them and squeal like a little girl when I meet them, let’s get back to the contest.

The contest has come full circle (please hear that last sentence in a Darth Vader voice…it’s necessary).  And there is, as it turns out, a decisive winner.  But first, the up-runners:

Tying for 5th place:

Sleigh Bells and Linkin Park.

The Sleigh Bells shirt, entered by Jimmy Proszeck:

“I chose it because I think music should reflect pop culture, even if it feeds on itself, which actually happens a lot.  So I chose the Sleigh Bells jersey because it parodies the old Chicago Bulls jersey basketball legend Michael Jordan wore.”

Oddly enough, I picked the shirt for the poll for the same reason that Jimmy picked it.  I liked the throwback to Jordan’s jersey.

The Linkin Park shirt was entered by Ashley Gatlin, but she was unavailable for comment (Note: I love saying that.  Unfortunately, she left her phone in Chicago in an attempt to evade my desperate attempts to reach her.  I find this rude and shall immortalize that rudeness here.  The perfect revenge!).

I picked the shirt because I loved the little video game-esque people on it.  Made me giggle.

In 4th place:

Mister Heavenly.

The Mister Heavenly shirt, entered by Nicole Montgomery:

“The pineapple skinned Noriega, cause he had the nickname Pineapple…face?  Something like that.  For his acne scars.  So, clever, clever shirt.”

I picked it because I thought it looked fun.  After reading what Nicole sent me, I realized that I picked it for all the wrong reasons.  I have been put ever so in my place.

In 3rd place:

Tommy & The High Pilots.

The Tommy & The High Pilots shirt, entered by Brett Zeiler:

“[I picked it] because I knew you liked the shirt and it would give me the best odds of making it to the final poll.”

Yeah.  He pandered.  Did it work?  Yeah.  But only because the shirt is really sweet.  Oh, and have I mentioned that I’m going to a Tommy & The High Pilots concert this Friday?  I have?  Well, just thought I’d remind you.

And now.  The moment most of you probably didn’t bother reading through the post to see…the runner-up is:

Regina Spektor.

The Regina Spektor shirt, entered by Katie Rauhoff:

“1. The shirt “name” is “No Surprises”
2. The proceeds of the shirt go to help Doctors Without Borders. Regina Spektor sold it at a Haiti Relief concert and continues to sell it for the cause of helping the good doctors.AND
3. The person with an unusual head is reading a book. YAY reading!
PS-The name is also a Radiohead song, “No Surprises” I like that it combines two musical talents.”

I loved this shirt.  I mean, who sees shirts like that ever?  Also, it was a refreshing change from some of the more bandcentric shirts on the poll.  Of course, knowing that the shirt was named for a Radiohead song makes the winner that more fortuitous…

In 1st Place:

Radiohead.

Radiohead Shirt, taken by Sherrie G., available at her Flickr. http://www.flickr.com/people/optionthis/

The Radiohead shirt, entered by James Strickland:

“I picked [it] because it was a) clever, what with it being a cover for a body, (b) being rainbow tape for the In Rainbows shirt and (c) the running computer HTML language love affair.”

Have to admit, this was my favorite shirt on the poll, so I’m delighted that you all voted in accordance with my wishes.  I mean, it’s SO clever.  And adorable.  I would wear that shirt.  In fact, I’m currently lusting after it.

Congratulations, James!  You win the $10 iTunes gift card!  Huzzah!

And with that, I wish you a good evening.  And take heart, lovelies.  There will be another contest announced soon.  I have too much fun with these.

Oh, wait!  One more thing.  Did I tell you about the Tommy & The High Pilots concert happening this week in St. Louis.  Yeah.  IN YOUR FACE (unless you made the right decision and are going…then you’re cool and we’ll hang out later).  G’night!

Best Quotes From Songs – The Love Edition

Standard

I don’t want to get mushy on you all, but there are some quotes about love from songs that I go gaga over.  And you’re going to hear all about my favorites.  Not because you should.  Not even because I want you to.  It’s because you NEED to.  I’m looking out for you.  You’re welcome.  And there are seven because I felt like it.  Have recommendations?  I’ll consider them.

So.  Running in at number 7…

7. “Pink Squares” by I Was A Cub Scout

“Oh, oh, oh, am I in trouble? / Darling, I apologize. / I need you more than anything / Please come back with me tonight. / Oh, oh, oh, am I in trouble? / Darling, I apologize. / I need you more than anything / Please don’t ever leave my side.”

To me, this is a perfect example of a love song.  It’s wonderful.  The thought is so simple, but so right.  A couple has a disagreement and the person that (presumably) started it is trying to make sure the disagreement doesn’t end things for them.  Like I said, it’s simple but seems right.

6. “Lonely Place” by Tommy & The High Pilots

“Oh, and just like me / She wants a family / Create us some energy / Out of the blue. / That we’ll do. / Oh, and maybe she’s someone I’ve made up / And maybe she’s somebody true / But I won’t rest until I know you.”

I adore this song so much.  And I love this thought: maybe you haven’t found the perfect person, but that shouldn’t stop you from looking for them.  I find this song wistful and hopeful and, like I said, I adore it.

5. “King of Carrot Flowers Part. 1″ by Neutral Milk Hotel

“And this is the room one afternoon I knew I could love you / And from above you how I sank into your soul / Into that secret place where no one dares to go.”

This is my favorite Neutral Milk Hotel song, and it’s probably because of this stanza.  I’m not sure if it requires an explanation.  It’s just lovely.

4. “Rise To Me” by The Decemberists

“My darling, my sweetheart, I am in your sway / Two cold climes, come spring time / So let me hear you say / My love / I am gonna stand my ground.”

I love The Decemberists way too much to not include them in this list.  Particularly when this song has such powerful worlds.  I can’t help but be moved when he says “my darling, my sweetheart, I am in your sway.”  It’s beautiful.

3. “I Will Follow You Into The Dark” by Death Cab For Cutie

“If heaven and hell decide / That they both are satisfied / Illuminate the nos on their vacancy signs / If there’s no one beside you / When your soul embarks / Then I’ll follow you into the dark.”

I think this song has become a classic, and rightfully so.  I mean, how wonderfully romantic/soulful/EVERYTHING is it to tell someone that you’d follow them into the dark.  That they wouldn’t be left alone.  EVER.  I think the simple melody underscores the sheer power of the lyrics.

2. “Anything For You” by Ludo

“I’d give up anything. / Anything for you. / I’d give it all. / All of this is true. / But the best story that I could ever tell / Is the one where I am growing old with you. / All I’ve ever wanted, see, was to tell you honestly / I’d do anything for you. / I’d do absolutely anything for you.”

This might be my favorite concept for a love song ever.  The person singing is describing all of these ridiculous, absurd scenarios, then saying that “the best story that I could ever tell is the one where I am growing old with you.”  You get the honesty of the feelings from the lies he tells.

AND, number one!

1. “Slow Hands” by Interpol

“But I am married to your charms and grace / I just go crazy like the good old days / You make me want to pick up a guitar / And celebrate the myriad ways that I love you.”

This quote is brilliant and wonderful and fantastic.  That last line.  How does it not conjure up warm, fuzzy feelings?  ”Celebrate the myriad ways that I love you.”  I’m convinced that if you tell your significant other this, they will swoon.  Better if you serenade them (but only if you can sing).

And that’s that, lovelies.  Just a few thoughts for you all on this absurdly warm evening (for real, it’s November, weather).  Of course, I have a few closing statements:

  1. “Hello Sadness” by Los Campesinos! is available in the US tomorrow.  I highly recommend buying it, listening to it, and falling as in love with that band as I am.
  2. How excited are you for the Ha Ha Tonka/Tommy & the High Pilots concert in a couple of weeks?
  3. Have you submitted shirts for the Best Band Shirts contest?  IT’S GONNA BE GREAT. ENTER NOW.

Los Campesinos! – Hold On Now, Youngster…

Standard
So, you know how I like music and stuff?  Well, I have a treat for you this fine evening.  And that treat is Los Campesinos!.  This band is comprised of a seemingly infinite number of people (for real, there are a ton of people in this band.  And they all add Campesinos! as their last name…so it’s Ellen Campesinos!, which is really adorable, and I’m rambling because I’m so in love with them) and they’re from Cardiff, Wales.  And you can REALLY hear their accents and I love it so much.

Los Campesinos!

Okay.  I will now begin to speak coherently about them.  I’ll confess.  I’m only really familiar with their first album right now which is “Hold On Now, Youngster…”  and it’s pretty great.  The first track is “Death to Los Campesinos!” (link to the song below), and it is catchy, dancey and has super clever lyrics mixed with a healthy does of whimsy.  Take the following lines, for example:
“If you catch me with my hands in the till / I promise sugar, I wasn’t trying to steal / I’m just swimming in copper to smell and pretend like a robot.”
Tell me you could resist smiling at that, and we’re no longer pretend friends.  And reading the lyrics (as is usually the case with fun songs), doesn’t even begin to do the song justice.  Please.  If you don’t listen to any of their other songs (which would be a mistake), at least listen to this one.
Of course, the fifth track on the album is also worth a mention.  ”My Year In Lists” has probably one of my favorite self-deprecating lines in it.
“You said, ‘Send me stationary / To make me horny’ / So I always write you letters / In multicolors / Decorating envelopes for foreplay / Damn extended metaphors / I get carried away.”
There are some songs where I just stare at the lyrics, loving how they fit together, but with no idea how they were fit together in the first place.  This is one of those songs.  And, dear Methuselah, the harmonies in this song.  They blend seamlessly (even though you know there are three voices there), and it’s really hard to imagine them without the others.
But, of course, harmonies and clever lyrics aside, the band also has some surprisingly poignant moments.  I know I’ve mentioned “Knee Deep At ATP” before, and here’s the reason why:
“And every sentence that I spoke / Began and ended in ellip…sis / Each of eight fingers gripping what he wrote / Clung on tightly / Like parenthesis / And for each correctly used apostrophe / I could feel my heart sink inside my chest in front of me / So maybe the lining of a winter’s coat / Mightn’t be the best place / To hide a summer’s secret.”
This song, with the violin in the background and the mute longing and loss in the lead singer’s voice just gets me every time.  And the ending of the song…well, listen to it and figure out why I swoon yet simultaneously scream the last lyrics like a banshee.
Then there’s arguably my favorite song on the album.  ”This Is How You Spell, “HAHAHA, We Destroyed The Hopes And The Dreams Of A Generation Of Faux-Romantics.”"  You know how parents name their children with the hopes that the name chosen will allow the child to do great things/be whatever they want/become president?  That’s how Los Campesinos! named this song.  They gave it the very best chance at gaining happiness.  And judging by the number of listens this song has gotten on MY iPod…SUCCESS.  Here’s a sampling of the gloriousness of this song:
“I left your shallow skin / And a note on your kitchen sideboard / It read I have left you / Please never try to find me / This is no existential crisis / Just turn your pain into piety / And I set your alarm clock / For 4 AM the next morning.”
Also, Gareth (the lead singer) has a tendency of busting out with some of the most amazing spoken bits of song I’ve ever heard (and I’m kind of a sucker for those moments…).  In “This Is How…” (You know the rest):
“…And the trains on your skin spoke more to me than the reams and reams of the half-finished novels you kept lying around all over the place / And every quotation that dribbled from your mouth like a final, fatal life journal entry / I know / I am wrong / I am sorry.”
This song is brilliant.  And there’s so much more on this album that’s worth a listen.  I don’t know that there’s a song I don’t like (though I certainly have my least favorite [# 2]) and I can’t say that about some of my favorite artists (yes you clever people, that includes the Decemberists).
Unfortunately, I can’t give you a more complete review of the band.  I’m working my way through their EEP “We Are Beautiful, We Are Damned” right now, and it’s rocking my world in a crazy axis-shifting kind of way.
With that final thought, here is the track list for “Hold On Now, Youngster…”  I recommend listening to all of them.
  1. “Death to Los Campesinos!”
  2. “Broken Heartbeats Sound Like Breakbeats”
  3. “Don’t Tell Me To Do The Math(S)”
  4. “Drop It Doe Eyes”
  5. “My Year In Lists”
  6. “Knee Deep At ATP”
  7. “This Is How You Spell, “HAHAHA, We Destroyed The Hopes And The Dreams Of A Generation Of Faux-Romantics”"
  8. “We Are All Accelerated Readers”
  9. “You! Me! Dancing!”
  10. “…And We Exhale And Role Our Eyes In Unison”
  11. “Sweet Dreams, Sweet Cheeks”
  12. “2007: The Year Punk Broke My Heart”
And, just in case you decided you wanted to listen to all of them, here are the songs in playlist form: Spotify and Grooveshark.
I’m sure I’ll be mentioning this band again, particularly since there new album “Hello Sadness” comes out on November 15.  And “Hello Sadness” happens to be this month’s theme song.
It’s gonna be a good one, folks.

Hello Sadness – Los Campesinos!

Standard

November's Theme Song: "Hello Sadness" by Los Campesinos! Squint to read.

It’s November already.  Almost time for turkey and gravy and mashed potatoes and the Ha Ha Tonka and Tommy and the High Pilots concert.  Yeah.  I’m excited.

But, a new month also means a new theme song.  And I’ve picked this one for a multitude of reasons.  1, I like it. 2, it has the word wishbone in it and c, the album “Hello Sadness” comes out on November 15.  I’ve become real addicted to Los Campesinos!.  New post about them tomorrow night.  You’ve already seen some of there stuff on the site, and it’s time to introduce you properly.

So, ladies and gents, with no further fanfare (unless I feel like it), November’s theme song is:

“Hello Sadness” by Los Campesinos!

And remember.  Best song title contest ends at midnight tonight.  You must have your entries in before then.  The poll will go up tomorrow and I encourage everyone to vote for their fave.  The winner could be…YOU.  Or you.  No, not you, the one behind you…with the hat.  It’s adorable, btw.

VOTE!

Best Song Quotes Of Which There Are 13

Standard

Good Evening, Mr. Bond. I’ve been expecting you.

Sorry.  That just seemed appropriate.  Tonight’s edition of I-know-better-music-than-you will culminate in a list of some of my favorite song quotes.  Obviously, you are encouraged to tell me if you think I’m wrong, to tell me you agree with me, or to suggest some quotes that should have made it to the list.

Also, if you’re wondering why 13…why not 13?  Should you be engaging in such blatant numberism?  It’s not becoming.  Good day, madam.  I SAID GOOD DAY.

As always, viewer participation is advised.  And with that, I give you my top 13 song quotes*:

13. “In the Kingdom of Love / We’re all just fodder.” -“Kingdom of Spain” by The Decemberists

The only way you’ll understand this song is if you listen to it a minimum of two times.  I get something new out of it every time I listen to it, and this line always makes me nod wisely.

  12. ”Maybe the lining of a winter’s coat / Mightn’t be the best place / To hide a summer’s secret” - “Knee Deep At ATP” by Los Campesinos!

I know I’ve mentioned this song several times, but that’s only because I love it so much and it speaks to me.  Also, he says “mightn’t.”  MIGHTN’T.  I challenge you not to swoon when you hear it.  And not to feel a bit depressed about love after this song.

11. ”Coin-operated boy / With a pretty coin-operated voice / Saying that he loves me / That he’s thinking of me / Straight and to the point / That is why I want / A / Coin-operated boy.” - “Coin-Operated Boy” by The Dresden Dolls

This is another one of those songs that smacks you in the face.  At the beginning, you hear Amanda Palmer talking about the benefits of having a coin-operated boy.  Toward the end of the song, you realize she only wants one because she wants someone to love her and none of the real ones could do it right.  Yeah.  It’s a bit of a quirky downer.

10. ”We were certainly uncertain / At least I’m pretty sure I am.” - “Missed the Boat” by Modest Mouse

This quote puts me in mind of Peter Pan.  Oh, the cleverness of Isaac Brock!  But really.  He’s a brilliant lyricist.  You can never go wrong listening to some Modest Mouse.  Or Ugly Casanova.  Or any projects he’s involved in.  You can assume his work will always be good, and you would always be right.

9. ”It was love at second sight / I swear when I grow up / I won’t just buy you a rose / I will buy the flower shop / And you will never be lonely.” -“The Gambler” by Fun.

I think one of the reasons I like this song so much is that it’s talking about true love, but that it was “love at second sight.”  This entire song is lovely, and always makes me feel warm and romantically inclined.

8. ”‘Cause in my head / There is a Greyhound station / Where I send my thoughts / To far off destinations / So they may have a chance / Of finding a place where they’re / Far more suited than here.” - “Soul Meets Body” by Death Cab For Cutie

This is such a wonderful mental image.  I don’t know that its place on this list really needs an explanation.  It’s just great.  Thank you Ben Gibbard.  Thank you.

7. ”There’s a time to pray / And there’s a time to fight / Anything can be a weapon / If you’re holding it right.” - “Save Our City” by Ludo

This is one of those songs that gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.  And I immediately want to scream “VIVA LA REVOLUCION!” and then I want to lead a revolution.  It’s such a powerful statement, that “anything can be a weapon if you’re holding it right.”  It gives me chills.

6. ”You’re a masterpiece of particles / The genuine article / I’ll grease the wheels / Come out and spin it / I’ll keep the speed / You’ll be the limit.” - “The Limit”  by Tommy & the High Pilots

Before I heard this song, I had no idea it was the song I was looking for.  ”The Limit” is such a great song to dance to, and “you’re a masterpiece of particles” is one of the sweetest things ever.  Note to everyone: excellent pick-up line material.  But only if you have Tom Cantillon’s angelic voice AND looks.

5. ”If you ain’t sweet to me / I’ll desert you in a heartbeat / If you don’t savor me / I’ll salt you, make you savory.” - “If” by Islands

This song never fails to amuse me and force me to clap my hands with glee over Nick Thorburn’s play on words.  Do you get it?  ”If you don’t savor me, I’ll salt you, make you savory.”  DO YOU GET IT?

4. ”Language is the liquid / That we’re all dissolved in / Great for solving problems / After it creates a problem.” - “Blame It On The Tetons”by Modest Mouse

This is another of those lines where Isaac Brock is singing truth.  I have read arguments from philosophers struggling to say precisely what Brock does, and they don’t possess a tenth of his eloquence or present the same impact.  Words matter.  Thanks to Brock, the lesson has been learned.

3. ”Every saint has a past / Every sinner has a future.” - “Topeka” by Ludo

This line might be the most profound one on this list.  Have you ever read anything that gives you more hope?  No one is perfect and everyone has the chance to be better.  Tim Ferrell is a wonderful lyricist, and has great depth and insight that I wish Ludo would use more.

2. “I see signs now all the time / That you’re not dead, you’re sleeping / I believe in anything / That brings you back home to me.” -“Signs” by Bloc Party

You know that blank slate period when you don’t have a specific song in mind, but there’s one song that kind of hovers in the background?  That song for me is “Signs,” and it’s this one part.  The song is as melancholic as they come, and haunts me.  Which is appropriate considering the song.  Listening to it is really the only way I can do it justice.

And now.  The moment some of you probably scrolled to the bottom of the page for without reading anything else, the number one song quote on my list is:

1. “And how it whispered / ‘Oh, adhere to me’ / ‘For we are bound by symmetry.’” – “Red Right Ankle” by The Decemberists

For those of you who know me, or remember my post about the Decemberists where I showed you a picture of my tattoo, this is no surprise.  For the rest of you, try and wrap your brain around the significance of this quote.  ”We are bound by symmetry.”  When does that not apply?  Since I heard this song and fully comprehended it, I’ve never been able to look at another person without seeing that they are a PERSON.  Gay, black, Mormon or any variation therein, everyone is someone.  Music is powerful.

Now, good friends.  That does it for the list.  Again, comment if you wish to exclaim over my brilliance or mock me mercilessly.

One more thing.  This week (Thursday), Ha Ha Tonka will be playing at Lindbergh’s in Springfield.  If you want more info, go here.  I’ll be talking about it more later this week.

Now.  Go drink a  martini and get ready for the week.

Tommy & the High Pilots merchandise.

Just wanted to remind everyone that I take my band stalking seriously.  Also, if anyone from The High Pilots reads this, I’m looking to get my fourth shirt next month.  Come prepared.

*Order/songs/quotes/anything else I want is subject to change at any time based on any flight of fancy or journey of whimsy I go on.

Top 25 Most Played – Oct. 12

Standard

Okay. I’m going to preface this post by saying that my laptop crashed a few months ago, I had to reconstruct my iTunes library and I’m in a weird place.  Right.  I’m going to report my iPod’s “Top 25 Most Played” songs without cheating.  And I REALLY want to cheat.  So badly.

You’re about to see why.

This is what shame looks like.

  1. “Transistor Radio” by Cloud Cult
  2. “Happy Hippo” by Cloud Cult
  3. “That Man Jumped Out The Window” by Cloud Cult
  4. “Charlyne” by Mister Heavenly
  5. “I Am A Hologram” by Mister Heavenly
  6. ” Heart Heart Heartbreak” by Boys Like Girls
  7. “Your Girl” by Mister Heavenly

  23. “Pineapple Girl” by Mister Heavenly
  24. “The Baylor Squirrels” by Without A Face
  25. “Knee Deep At ATP” by Los Campesinos!
I know what you’re thinking.  So much Mister Heavenly, right?
I hope you’re done laughing at me.  Not quite?  Okay.  Snicker while reading ahead.
Here’s the deal.  Sometimes, I have moods.  Moods where I don’t want to have to look up the meanings of words or divine precisely what Ryan is saying or what ATP means.  Sometimes, I don’t like thinking, but I want a beat.  And that’s when I listen to Boys Like Girls.  Their music is simple and I get it 100% of the time.
And I’m not being disloyal to my favorite bands!  It’s not cheating if I only do it once…or twice…or enough times to get 6 Boys Like Girls songs in my Top 25 Most Played songs on my iPod.
Damn.  I didn’t think this through.

Weekly Setlist – October 6

Standard

If you haven’t already heard my little pumpkins, October’s theme song is “Autumn Beds” by Modest Mouse. It seems to perfectly encapsulate the month of changing seasons, changing leaves, the color orange…and it was the only song I could think of with “October” in it.  If you think of any others I should’ve used, please feel free to scoff at/mock me.  Or commend my excellent taste in music.

This week’s setlist goes out to everyone who seems to be doing way too much lately.  Remember, all work and no play makes everyone dull homo sapiens.  So, listen to October 6′s setlist, kick back, and let the music speak.
