First Concert – A Fond Memory

Standard

So, I just had one of those rare flashes of the past, where you hear something or see something that makes you ten years old again and you relive a moment with such crispness that you smile, shake your head and wonder why you’d ever wear such hideous clothing.

I am speaking of my first concert experience.  I was at work on Friday and, while I was on hold, I heard a song* that catapulted me back to March 1, 2000 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX.

I shouldn’t have even attended the concert, you see.  I wasn’t able to get a ticket and my friends who lived across the street (wonderful people, one of whom is now a paranormal investigator…yeah, wrap your brain around that one) had an extra they gave me the night of the concert.  They took me and that night was magic.  The music, the audience, the DANCING!

Yeah.  I’ve not mentioned what my first concert was yet.  I’m not embarrassed, per se.  It’s just that…this band is so different from what I listen to now.  I’m not pretentious or anything (shut up you), I just have a definite opinion.

And yes.  I do still have my concert shirt.

Backstreet Boys Concert Shirt

It’s a sweet memory, and it made me develop an appreciation for live music.  Even if my tastes don’t just run to boy bands anymore, this was an important step.  And it’s also a good reminder that, though I tend to listen to “indie” music quite a bit, that is certainly not the end of the music continuum.  Other music exists and other music is good.  Just because it’s pop or mainstream doesn’t mean it’s terrible, and just because I listen to a band you’ve never heard of doesn’t mean they’re better (though it probably means I’m being pretentious…I band name drop a lot.  It’s obnoxious.  Sorry, friends.).

Oh, and, in case you’re wondering, I do still jam out to Backstreet Boys occasionally.  I mean, come on.  They’re classic!

“No one else comes close to you, no one makes me feel the way you do.”

Sigh.

Just a reminiscence I wanted to share with you.  Feel free to comment, Tweet or Facebook with your first concert experience.  I’d love to hear it (even if you make fun of me for mine).

*It was totally this song.
